Birdbath Makeover (No more Angry Birds)

Talk about Angry Birds. For months those things have been bathing in this-well,not so pretty birdbath
Didn't seem right since I was enjoying my book and my bubbly
and bathing here
So to rid myself of the guilt from watching those poor birds suffer
(and suffer they did), I decided to give the birdbath a bit of a makeover the other day and did this
And this- turned out lovely, don't ya think?
And I am happy to say that the birds are happy and will not be flying South any longer! Now if only I can get that Angry Bird song out of my head
If you have bird guilt (and I know some of you do), click here and I will help you get rid of it and show you how I did this makeover.
Have a wonderful 4th of July Holiday!

For the Love of a Day Lily

If you have a green thumb, don't have a problem dividing and planting  and can grow perennials effortlessly this post is NOT for you ( but you can read along anyways).
It's for everyone else, and you know who you are
Don't be ashamed, I use to be just like you. I had no idea what a  Day Lily was. I had no idea that a few plants could spread and naturalize like this over time along my pathway
or if I dug up the plant every few years and divided them, I could get this along a retaining wall
Imagine my shock when I realized how pretty the Stella d'Oro Daylilies would look as a border in my front yard landcape
Or as a filler in my garden

Or around the pond in the backyard
But the biggest shock of all was when I realized I could cut these effortless, easy to grow, no maintenance daylilies and use them in flower arrangements from Spring to Fall
Don't be embarrassed or ashamed by not knowing any of this, remember I use to be one of you too! The biggest mistake you could make though, is not heading out to your garden center today to buy a few plants or better yet, asking a friend if you could dig up a few plants  and creating your own lily gardens.
 Have a great weekend!
FYI- Typically I post my Weekly Wow's on Sundays but now that summer is here and I want more lazy days and fun times with the kids , I will be moving my weekly wow's to a monthly series instead.

Easy Flower Arrangement From The Manor

Long before I moved to our home, I would be a regular patron in the floral department to get the freshest selection of pretty blooms. The girls at the counter were always quite happy to see me since I was there weekly.
But then we moved to home in the country -affectionately called 'Duke Manor' and things began to change.
See, I didn't need the girls at the floral department, I had what I needed right here at the manor to make my own little pretty arrangements.
Actually I should be a little upset with the girls at the counter because they never told me how easy it was to use the blooms from my own yard
along with the basics that I already had- scissors, a glass bowl, a few rocks and some water
I guess they also thought that I couldn't cut the stems at an angle
and place in my bowl, with my rocks and water
and repeat
Until I got this
Shame on you girls!!

How could something so wrong be so Right?

Having a considerable amount of "green" space to cut outside our windows  is  pretty much inevitable at my house, but we do what we have to do
and we hope along the way of riding the merry mower, there is something in the distance that makes us veer off of those pretty strait lines we like to create, that makes it look like a freshly manicured ball field
and we get closer
and closer, to witness such a beautiful little surprise in the pasture
suddenly the engine on the mower stops, I didn't feel like cutting anyways, and I cut and bring these little beauties inside
At this point, I forget that I was even on a mower today and instead envision running through a daisy field ( BTW- with clothes on!)
barefoot with the wind blowing through my hair
and life is fabulous with not a care in the world, but beautiful flowers on the table
Then I stop and get back on my mower, cause there's  more yard to cut!
Two tips to preserve cut flowers  1)  cut the stems at a 45 degree angle. 2) try adding half sprite or 7-up to half water. Flowers need the acidity and sugar. Refresh your water daily.

FYI- Us country gals don't use traditional fertilizer in these parts of the country, we use chicken poop. Yes poop. It really does make the grass green and lush.

Happy Easter and some Lily Care Tips

Happy Easter
Easter Lily

Today you or someone you know may receive a beautiful Easter Lily plant. I wanted to pass on a few basic caring tips to keep your plant healthy and beautiful.
  • Remove the yellow parts of your Lily which are called Anthers.  They are messy but doing so, will keep the petals white and give the flowers longer time to look beautiful.
  • Temperatures of around 60° to 65°F will keep your Lily flowers lasting the longest.
  • The best place for your Lily is in a room with natural light.
  • The soil of your plant should be kept lightly moist as long as your lily continues to flower.
  • Consider transplanting your Lily- I have always had the best luck of transplanting my Easter Lily outside to the garden. Lily's will come back each year, if cared for properly.
  • Keep Kitty away as Lily's can be dangerous and deadly to cats.
Enjoy this day with your family and friends.
